The Letter That Changed Everything
“I was a stranger, and you invited me in.” –Matthew 25:35
Hello, ZUMC! I'm Bonnie Smith, a long-time (30 years!) ZUMC member. My husband Ernie and I joined ZUMC when we were in the "old" building. We've been faithful church attendees through the years and ushered now and then, but until just a few years ago, we were never truly involved. It always seemed odd to me that we weren't better connected, as we were both active church members most of our lives.
Everything about my relationship with ZUMC changed the day I received a letter from Reverend Jamalyn inviting me to attend our church's new GriefShare class. My mother had attended church with us, and Reverend David had visited her in hospice and presided over her funeral. I thought and thought about Jamalyn's letter... did I need to attend? And then one Sunday, Jamalyn called my name as we were leaving church. She visited with us a bit and encouraged me to come. Reaching out made a difference.
I did attend, and I've never been so grateful. Not only did I learn a great deal, but I also began to connect - really connect - with other members of our community. I found my place within ZUMC. I've stayed on as a "helper" in GriefShare ever since, welcoming folks, staying in touch, sharing along the way. I've had the honor now to become a Stephen Minister and have made remarkable friends. We "usher" again now, always remembering the value of "reaching out!"
