Family and Belonging

“As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” –Proverbs 27:17

Yesterday in church, we talked about what it means for the church to be an “inclusive community.” This week we share stories whose lives have been blessed by the welcome and love they have received at ZUMC.

ZUMC—Hmmm—What does it mean to me? In two words—Family and Belonging!

That feeling started when I was living in Kansas City, and I was visiting my parents periodically. Every Sunday morning included ZUMC church and Sunday school. When I moved back to Indiana in 1984, attendance at ZUMC church and Sunday school was included again, but only on “special church days.” My father passed away in 1996, and the support I received from church members and friends convinced me that I should officially join. That is when my “family and belonging” journey began.

My first experience was Bob Dralle’s Bible 101 class. Next, just asking Marty Troyer about Disciple courses resulted in my being enrolled in the first course. I enjoyed it so much that I ended up taking all of them! About that time, it was becoming evident that a new church building was sorely needed. After watching as it was built, writing prayers to put inside the sanctuary columns, and attending the first service, I knew I belonged.

My “family” phase was beginning. The new building was wonderful, but I quickly realized that it was the people who made a difference in my life, so my journey with ZUMC continued. It has included Sunday School, more Bible Studies, serving on the Mission Team, four mission trips, and a small group called “Our Two Cents.” If you wonder about the name, ask us for our opinion, and we will be happy to give you “our two cents.”

In 2021, my mother passed away, and I found myself retired with a lot of time on my hands, and I needed to find what was next for me. One day I walked into the church office and asked Dawn, “Do you need any volunteer help?” Four years later, you will still find me in the office on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays. I am blessed to be surrounded by fun-filled, dedicated Christians who have helped deepen my faith. Stop in! I would love to meet you!

As Proverbs 27:17 says, “…as iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” That’s what ZUMC means to me – BELONGING AND FAMILY.

Heavenly Father, I look back and see how you led me to ZUMC. Thank you! I pray we continue to grow, knowing you belong to us, but more importantly, that we belong to you.
